Discover the latest Texas Longhorns Week 2 Development Scorecard, including player updates and overall development progress. We answer who is excelling and who needs to kick it up a notch.
This will be a weekly recap where I update you on the weekly and overall development of the Texas Longhorns players based on the development component of the Adjusted Ratings model.
In psychology, folks often discuss the role of genetics and environment on shaping a person's personality and even their future. Similarly, both talent acquisition (recruiting, transfers) and development are key to a college football team in building a championship program, and this is my Adjusted Rating.
I would like to share my model for accessing a program's true talent level based on several factors:
Recruiting rankings
Playing time as measured by snaps
The QUALITY of play during that playing time
The key to this exercise will be to answer the impossible question one player at a time. What makes a college player great - innate talent (genetics) or development (environment)? My adjusted rating system will show a way to utilize both.
If you want to know more, check out the adjusted ratings article here.
This system uses data from
As a reminder. Here is the scale for the Adjusted Rating and how it relates to the 247Sports Composite Score for recruits and star rankings.
Now we will deep dive into Texas Longhorns Adjusted Ratings After Week 2. For this weekly update we are going to look at several things:
Who had the best and worst development scores on the Texas team during Week 2?
Snap Leaders after Week 2/ in Game 2
The highest 5 and lowest 5 overall 2024 season development scores after Week 2
The Young Guns- First- and Second-Year Players that are playing and have development scores reflecting that they are developing well.
Top Career Development Players
Who had the best and worst development scores on the Texas team during Week 2?
In Week 2, PFF recorded offense and defense scores for 44 Longhorns (there were 66 in Week 1). Those above 70 and below 55 were with more than 10 snaps had these development scores in Week 2. (A negative score happens when the PFF rating is below 50.)
Here is the Development score calculation
Development = (Snaps * (PFF Grade - 50)) / 100,000
Notes:
Colin Simmons- the true freshman had the highest PFF score in limited snaps
Ewers, Banks, and HELMS led the offense
Barron, Muhammed, Williams, and Mukuba led the defense. Reports of an awesome defensive backfield are confirmed.
Broughton did well too.
The OL had their hands full with Michigan and yet they did well even if some of these scores indicate issues. Cam Williams (4) and Hayden Conner (1) had penalty issues that drop their scores significantly. The OL grades reflect more issues in run blocking and good to great pass blocking. As above, Banks was simply GREAT at both. There is no curve here. They were playing Michigan. Of all of the OL players with significant snaps Cole Hutson may be of the biggest concern.
Others to watch and look for improvement:
Juan Davis
Bill Norton- lowest PFF rating of any Longhorns player
Morice Blackwell
David Gbenda
Again, Texas was playing AT Michigan. Let's see how the next weeks progress.
Snap Leaders after Week 2/ in Game 2
Cam Williams- 123/ 71
Quin Ewers, Kelvin Banks, Jake Majors- 116/ 71
Hayden Conner- 116/ 71
Gunner Helms- 101/ 57
Malik Muhammed- 93/ 57
DJ Campbell- 91/ 46
Matthew Golden- 86/ 50
Isaiah Bond- 84/ 50
Jahdae Barron- 83/ 56
Then the numbers drop to 67
These 10 are the Players the Longhorns are DEPENDING on currently most of the games.
The highest 5 and lowest 5 overall 2024 season development scores after Week 2
There are 14 Longhorns who have had 0 snaps in weeks 1 and 2.
There are 56 Longhorns with more than 10 snaps in weeks 1 and 2.
Notes
Ewers is being the Ewers we thought he could be.
Banks will join him in Round 1 of the NFL Draft if this keeps up.
With the exception of Helms, the other TE need to step up
DTs are going to set their own roles by performance.
The Gunner Helm story is going to be AWESOME to monitor.
The Young Guns- First- and Second-Year Players that are playing and have development scores reflecting that they are developing well.
There is a ton to be excited about on this list.
Top Career Development Players
These are the players on the team that have the highest development scores.
The fact that Muhammed makes this list in his second year when others have had 4+ seasons of development scores just shows how good Muhammed could be. Derek Williams, Anthony Hill, and Johntay Cook are rising too.
Let me know what you think of this development report.
