Just so we all are on the same page and can properly frame the Astros game tonight, here is my recap of the 8/25/24 Astros victory over the Orioles.
The Astros beat one of the four best teams in the MLB under the following circumstances:
1. Without their two MVP level hitters who are by far the two best hitters in the lineup
2. With no production from the team leader, offensive catalyst, and heart and soul of the team
3. An excellent start from a pitcher traded for at the trade deadline that has been incredible for the Astros
4. Huge timely hitting from a backup catcher who was signed in the offseason and who has been possibly the best backup catcher in the league this season.
5. Multiple key hits from a rookie 1B / 3B who was never expected to be in high leverage positions this season.
6. Multiple runs scored by a player signed from the waiver wirel ess than a week ago.
7. A signature and frankly scary huge defense play by a utility role player.
8. A key leverage inning from a veteran reliever making his first appearance for the team after being picked up after clearing waivers the day before.
9. Great closeout innings from two of the team’s top relievers.
10. Last but NOT LEAST. Massive back to back Home Runs from a legendary 3B playing while clearly not fully healthy and one of the top young catchers in the league whose bat is so critical he DHs or plays 1B when not catching.
Given the contributions from many players some of whom were not even on the radar for this team, the game was an incredible testimony of the team’s culture and resilience.
Astros manager Joe Espada managed the yeam with his usual logical and data-based excellence.
