Win or Lose today, there is one thing that will be clear before the end of the day for the Texas Longhorns..
With all due respect to the residents of Lubbock, THIS will be the last time the Longhorns will choose to play in Lubbock for a LONG time maybe ever. Tech fans know it and intend to make life a living hell for the Texas players today. This will just delay the return trip to Lubbock.
Texas has opponents currently scheduled out as far as 2033.
Future Texas Non-Conference Opponents (per fbschedules.com)
Year | Texas School | Power 5 Opponent | Other |
2022 | UTSA | Alabama | ULM |
2023 | Rice | at Alabama | Wyoming |
2024 | UTSA | Michigan | Colorado State |
2025 | UTEP | at Ohio State | San Jose State |
2026 | UTSA | Ohio State | Texas State |
2027 | UTEP | at Michigan | TBD |
2028 | UTSA | Georgia (will be canceled) | TBD |
2029 | UTEP | at Georgia (will be canceled) | TBD |
2030 | UTSA | at Florida (will be canceled) | TBD |
2031 | UTEP | Florida (will be canceled) | TBD |
2032 | TBD | at Arizona St | TBD |
2033 | TBD | Arizona | TBD |
Can these non-conference opponents change? YES! I doubt that Texas would swap out Michigan or Ohio St. for Texas Tech. Just being honest. This means it would be 2027 at the earliest that Texas COULD play any member of the Big 12 they are leaving behind. Texas will cancel their games in 2028 to 2031 with Georgia and Florida because they will be in the same conference.
I predict the only way the Longhorns return to Lubbock will be if there a three for one deal arranged. It is still very unlikely because why would Texas risk losing to Tech? Because of the difficult SEC schedule that lies ahead, there is no real reason to play the Red Raiders on the road ever again.
The SEC is expected to go to a nine conference game schedule, so Texas will continue to have three non-conference games. They are likely to continue to rotate games with the schools within their system- UTEP and UTSA, and with Rice and Texas State. Texas is also likely to play a Southland or a WAC conference school occasionally.
Well Texas fans, I say the Longhorns win 34-17 and we never have to visit Lubbock again. That was my original pick and I am sticking with it.
